Golf at Royal Mayfair
At the heart of it all sits a timeless golf course, prepared to withstand the next 100 years.
TOP 100 GOLF COURSES IN CANADA
Royal Mayfair is consistently ranked among the top 100 golf courses in Canada and—as a past host of both the Canadian Open and Canadian Women’s Open—it’s proven to be the top club of choice for major professional championships hosted in Edmonton.
With a delicate balance of strategy and playability, Royal Mayfair is fun for everyone—regardless of skill level.

“One of only several Canadian golfing societies with the ‘Royal’ prefix and its splendid course is certainly worthy of such a regal club.”

DESIGNED BY THE BEST
The original Mayfair course was designed by J. Munro Hunter, a giant Scotsman known for his prodigious length off the tee. “The course, as laid out, was pretty straight forward,” wrote Shirley Graham in the club’s history. It didn’t take long for the club to recognize it would have to make some changes to elevate the course if it wanted to live up to its full potential.
In 1927, the club turned to Stanley Thompson, Canada’s best-known designer, who was responsible for several of Alberta’s top courses, including the Jasper Park Lodge and Banff Springs. Thompson heavily renovated Mayfair over several seasons, creating more bunkers, reshaping greens, and rerouting holes.
In 1988, the club voted in favour of hiring Les Furber to lead yet another extensive renovation of the course.

However, Thompson’s hallmarks—including bold bunkering and challenging corridors—persist, testing the best golfer while allowing the mid-handicapper to enjoy their round.
In recent years, Royal Mayfair has retained Doug Carrick to help create a restoration plan for the club.

TRULY TIMELESS
100 years of excellence
A great course only rises to the top after 100 years because it continues to tap into a golfer’s imagination and outpace their expectations. That’s exactly why Royal Mayfair is still vital and significant—nearly 100 years after Stanley Thompson renovated the club’s initial design.
